Georgia’s Departments of Agriculture, Education and Public Health, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and Georgia Organics came together at the historic Georgia Railroad Freight Depot to celebrate the over 40 percent of Georgia school districts with outstanding farm to school programs. Seventy-five school districts, serving more than one million students in Georgia, are now participating in farm to school. These districts served more than 97 million school meals with local food items during the 2016-17 school year.
Banks County School System was recognized at the Honorary level for their accomplishments during the 2016-17 school year, including: · During Feed My School for a Week at Banks County Elementary School, locally sourced foods were served at both breakfast and lunch, including strawberries from Jaemor Farms, beef from Brush Creek Farms, sausage from Carroll's Sausage, and honey from Jarrett Apiaries. · Students planted, tended, and harvested spring onions, red and green leaf lettuce, spinach, and broccoli in raised bed gardens. They got to enjoy these items in taste tests and on the school chef salads. · Locally grown food items were offered on their menu on 89 days for breakfast and 96 days for lunch.
